Definition of Strain

Strain (ε) represents the relative deformation of the material caused by mechanical stresses, e.g. force. Strain is distributed along the material and can be measured for example with strain gauges or MicroWire sensor. Most of the sensors measure the linear strain, deformation along one dimension. It is defined as the change of the object's length (Δl) (caused by applied force) with respect to its original length (l0).
